Restore your heart-body-brain balance for optimal health
Naturopathic Doctor · Counselor · Honolulu, Hawaii
This practice is best suited for people dealing with recurring mental, emotional, cognitive, or nervous system patterns that have not fully responded to conventional approaches alone.
Most of them have already been trying. They’ve done the research, seen multiple providers, tried protocols, medications, and supplements that were supposed to work. Some have been at this for years. What brings them here is a specific question — one that stops fitting the usual frameworks: why do certain patterns persist despite treatment, insight, or genuine effort?
Dr. Gil’s practice is built around that question. Not solely symptom management. Not merely optimization. The question of what is actually driving the pattern — at the level of physiology, stress adaptation, and lived experience — is where the work lives.
Many patients arrive exhausted from trying to hold everything together. Others feel discouraged after years of partial answers, temporary improvements, or conflicting recommendations. The goal is not to fit a person into a rigid framework — it’s to understand what may contribute to the patterns they keep running into, and address it at the right level.
Dr. Gil Winkelman completed his medical degree at the National College of Natural Medicine and has practiced naturopathic medicine since 2008. He’s licensed in Oregon and Hawaii. His clinical work centers on two advanced modalities that address mental and physical health at the physiological level.
Advanced nutrient therapy based on biochemical individuality. Dr. Gil has incorporated Walsh Protocol principles into clinical practice since 2010, with multiple advanced trainings through the Walsh Research Institute. The protocol identifies measurable biochemical subtypes — pyroluria, methylation variants, copper imbalance, zinc deficiency — and uses targeted nutrient therapy to support physiological patterns associated with anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, and related conditions.
Low Energy Neurofeedback System, available in person in Honolulu. Dr. Gil trained directly with LENS inventor Len Ochs and has used the system in clinical practice for almost twenty years. LENS is appropriate for a wide range of presentations including traumatic brain injury, migraines, anxiety, autism spectrum conditions, ADD/ADHD, and post-concussion syndrome.
Dr. Gil has written and presented extensively on the assessment and treatment of traumatic brain injury, delivered the keynote address at the 2010 Annual Pacific Northwest Brain Injury Conference hosted by the Brain Injury Association of Oregon, and contributed clinical writing to Holistic Primary Care. He has worked with veterans navigating TBI and PTSD.
Naturopathic consultations and telemedicine are available for patients across multiple states.
Over years of clinical practice, a pattern became apparent. People improved biochemically, physiologically, symptomatically — and often returned to the same stress responses, behavioral patterns, or emotional dynamics under pressure.
The presenting issue had shifted. Something else had not. That observation eventually led to the deeper layer of this work.
The Master’s degree in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology wasn’t an addition to the clinical training. It was the recognition of something that the clinical work kept pointing toward.
What we carry — unresolved stress, stress-response conditioning, lived experience — doesn’t stay separate from the body. Over time, it shapes physiology, nervous system function, and the adaptive patterns the body returns to. Symptom patterns are rarely arbitrary. They reflect interacting physiological, neurological, behavioral, and experiential factors — and they often persist until the right layer is addressed.
This shows up in recognizable ways:
The person whose biochemistry has stabilized but who still can’t move through a particular stress response.
The patient whose nervous system has been regulated but who returns to the same behavioral or relational dynamics under pressure.
The high-functioning individual running quietly on chronic hypervigilance — holding everything together until something breaks down.
Over time, the clinical work increasingly highlighted the interaction between physiology, stress adaptation, behavior, and meaning-making. The educational work grew out of the same clinical observations that shaped the practice itself.
I live on the beautiful island of Oahu, where he enjoys spending time in nature, surfing, and hiking. I have developed a fluid meditation and yoga practice.

The Restoration Protocol, Signal Lab, Signal Revealed, and Rewrite the Signal. Designed for the person who has already done substantial work and is ready to address the pattern beneath the symptom. Educational and reflective in nature, not medical or psychotherapeutic treatment.
