Maya has a type — she’ll tell you this herself, laughing, like it’s a personality trait. Brilliant, funny, magnetic, a little unavailable, always in the middle of becoming something. She’s dated four of these types in the last six years, and each time, she’s felt the most alive she’s ever been. By the third one, she started noticing something: the specific feeling of leaning forward, of tracking someone’s mood the way you’d track weather. “I used to think that was just what attraction felt like,” she told me. “Now I’m not sure if I was drawn to him, or drawn to a feeling of almost having him.”
That confusion sits at the center of one of the most common questions in dating: chemistry vs. compatibility. Intense chemistry can feel like proof — like your body has found something your mind hasn’t caught up to yet. But intensity isn’t evidence of anything on its own. Calm doesn’t prove compatibility either. Both are just information about the strength of a reaction, not about what’s producing it.
Compatibility vs. Chemistry
In this episode, I break down the three things usually underneath attraction: familiarity (what your system already recognizes, for better or worse), longing (what you’ve never had and are hoping someone will finally give you), and compatibility (whether your actual, ordinary lives — your values, your timing, your capacity to handle conflict — fit together). Most attraction is some mix of all three, which is exactly why chemistry vs. compatibility rarely resolves into a clean either/or. You can feel real chemistry with someone you’re genuinely incompatible with, and real compatibility with someone who took longer to feel exciting.
The test I offer isn’t “does this feel calm” or “does this feel electric.” It’s simpler: can the attraction tolerate reality? Can it survive an ordinary disappointment without you needing to explain it away — and can you still recognize yourself when you’re with them?
