A patient I’ll call Naomi told me about a dinner. Partway through the meal her partner went quiet. She asked if he was okay, he said he was fine, and she asked again. He pulled back, and something in her went out. By the time they drove home, neither of them knew how to reconnect. It’s a small scene, and it says a lot about emotional safety in relationships.
In this episode of the Love series, Dr. Gil Winkelman looks at emotional safety in relationships, and at a question most of us never ask out loud: who is responsible for how safe you feel? Two things often get tangled together here. Relational safety is how someone treats you. Felt safety is whether your body can stay present. They are related, but they are not the same thing, and mixing them up is one of the quieter ways couples get stuck.
You’ll hear why clinging and going quiet can look like opposites but may be two ways of getting through not knowing. You’ll hear why waiting for a partner to make you feel safe makes sense, since co-regulation is real, and what that waiting costs both people when it becomes an impossible job. Dr. Gil also explains differentiation in plain words: staying in contact with someone while remaining recognizably yourself, which is neither distance nor fusion.
From there, the episode lays out three kinds of responsibility: his, hers, and theirs. A partner can be a source of safety, but they can’t be the only place it lives. Being responsible to you is not the same as being responsible for you. And when your feelings are telling the truth about a partner who is actually unsafe, they deserve to be taken seriously, with boundaries, outside support, and sometimes leaving as legitimate responses.
If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re asking too much, needing too much, or hiding too much, this conversation offers a clearer way to think about emotional safety in relationships, without turning it into a verdict on you or on them. Naomi returns at the end with one small change you can try the next time you notice yourself waiting.
