Healing generational trauma begins with understanding what you’re actually working with — because not all inherited patterns come from the same place.
You’re in a conflict with someone you love and you hear yourself say exactly what your father said. Or you carry a grief you can’t locate in your own history. Or you react to pressure in ways that feel disproportionate to anything you’ve actually lived through. Something is running that doesn’t feel like yours. And the work you’ve been doing keeps bumping into it.
In this episode, Dr. Gil Winkelman breaks down three distinct mechanisms behind inherited family patterns — where they come from, why they require different approaches, and why working at the wrong level keeps producing partial results. Healing generational trauma often requires understanding the source.
The three mechanisms:
The first is learned behavior — the templates absorbed before you had language. How conflict was handled, whether emotions were safe, what you had to be to belong. These became invisible because they didn’t feel learned. They felt like reality. And because they were learned, they can be updated.
The second is nervous system conditioning — set before memory, through the quality of attunement you received early on. Insight alone doesn’t reach this layer. The baseline was set through relational experience and it updates the same way.
The third is epigenetic inheritance — the most misunderstood of the three. What gets passed down isn’t memory or emotional content. It’s the biological terrain that makes certain stress responses harder to regulate. When this is a factor, the entry point is physiological, not psychological.
Dr. Gil also names a fourth dimension from clinical work that doesn’t fit cleanly into any category — patterns that seem to carry a family narrative, running before you arrived. Understanding it, even without a clear mechanism, can be enough to begin moving it.
If you’ve been doing the work and keep hitting the same ceiling, this episode might tell you why.
